Visita Iglesia in Manila

Holy Week is fast approaching, if you are planning to have your Visita Iglesia within the city of Manila, I listed historical Catholic churches with intricately designed façade and beautiful interior that you may want to include in your itinerary. Some churches are conveniently located near each other and are accessible to public transportation. For commuters, this is also a sample itinerary with Monumento, Cubao and EDSA-Taft as the starting point.

1. Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church)

How to get there:
If you are coming from Monumento or EDSA-Taft take LRT and alight at Carriedo Station. You may also ride a jeep going to Taft/Mabini/Baclaran if you’re from Monumento; or a jeep going to Blumentritt/Monumento if you’re from EDSA-Taft and alight at Carriedo. Just walk along this street until you reach Quiapo Church.

If you are coming from Cubao, take LRT at Araneta Center-Cubao Station and alight at Recto. Walk towards Isetann Mall along Evangelista Street. Continue walking into this street until you find the church. You may also ride a España-Quiapo-Taft/Mabini/Pier bound jeep or fx and drop off at Quiapo Church, Quezon Blvd.

2. Santa Cruz Parish

How to get there:
From Quiapo Church, walk the street of Carriedo. Pass Lacson Plaza. The church is beside Philtrust Bank Building and opposite BPI. From Carriedo, you can also turn right to Rizal Avenue (walk at the front side of Philtrust Bank). Turn left to Bustos Street. Continue walking, the church is at the left side.

3. Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz (Binondo Church)

How to get there:
In front of Santa Cruz Church is the Carriedo Fountain. Across the street you will see the Arch of Goodwill, it’s the entrance to Chinatown. You may take a pedicab going to Binondo Church. A serendipity walk is also a delightful option, though, it’s quite a long walk. When you reach Ongpin Street continue walking until you reach the church.

How to get there:
From Binondo Church, ride a jeep with signboard Pier. Drop off at Manila Cathedral.

5. San Agustin Church

How to get there:
From Manila Cathedral, just walk along General Luna St. (Calle Real del Palacio). This church is only few blocks away from the cathedral and Palacio del Gobernador where the COMELEC main office is located.

6. Our Lady of Remedies Parish (Malate Church)

How to get there:
From San Agustin Church, just walk along General Luna St. going to Green Circle (near Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila). Ride a jeep going to Harrison-Baclaran. Get off at Malate Church which is at the left side of Plaza Rajah Sulayman.

7. Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned (Sta. Ana Church)

How to get there:
From Malate Church, turn right to Remedios Street. Walk towards Adriatico Street or take a pedicab. Ride a jeep going to Pedro Gil (near Robinsons Place Manila). Get off and ride another jeep with signboard Sta. Ana. Get off in front of Sta. Ana Church.

How to go back to the starting point:
From Sta. Ana Church, take a jeep going to Padre Faura-Taft Ave. Get off and turn left towards LRT Pedro Gil Station. If you are going to EDSA-Taft, take LRT going to EDSA-Taft and alight at this station.

If you are going to Cubao, from LRT EDSA-Taft pass the bridge walkway to MetroPoint Mall and MRT Station. Ride MRT and alight at Cubao Station. At North bound lane of EDSA-Taft you may also take a bus going to Cubao.

Another alternative route if you are going to Cubao: From LRT Pedro Gil Station alight at Doroteo Jose Station. Pass the bridge walkway to LRT 2. From LRT 2 Recto Station take a ride until you reach Araneta Center-Cubao.

If you are going to Monumento, from Pedro Gil Station take LRT going to Monumento.

From Padre Faura, you may also ride a jeep or FX going to your point of destination (EDSA-Taft, Cubao, Monumento).
